I write about subjects that interest me. Up to this point, they have focused primarily on mountain topics: mountaineering, mountain culture, history and environment. Mountain Culture Consultation
As founder of The Banff Centre for Mountain Culture, I was part of a process that built a complex and integrated program area around the general topic of mountains. I found this work to be extremely interesting and rewarding and, although I have retired from my position at The Banff Centre, I continue to consult with festivals and mountain institutes worldwide. I have worked with festivals, museums, mountain culture centres and institutes. My work in this area has been recognized in various ways, including the King Albert Award for contribution to mountain communities worldwide, which I was happy to accept together with my former colleague, Leslie Taylor. My areas of expertise are program content, strategic and business planning and fundraising.
Speaking
Most of my public speaking has revolved around my books, all of which are listed and described in the books section of this website. In addition to these presentations, I also lecture on mountain culture and environment topics, and have done so for the Himalayan Club of India, the Royal Geographical Society in London and at various festivals, universities and mountain culture centres. I also enjoy doing public interviews with mountain-related personalities such as Pico Iyer, Denis Urubko and Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner.
